  Tikal | Blogger | 01.29.07 | Blog
The largest and best preserved of Mayan ruins is the ancient metropolis of Tikal. Located in the northern department of El Petén, Tikal is probably the most notable tourist destination in Guatemala.
Built around 300 BC, Tikal was the center of the vast Mayan empire, which extended into the Yucatan Peninsula, and at its peak (300-900 AD) had a population greater then 100,000...

Mayan Ruins And One Last Night | Real Travel | 01.29.07 | Blog
With one last day in Belize I decided to make the most of it and do the Lamani Mayan Ruins. This is a tour done on the island that takes you inland to see the ruins made by the Mayan people dated 100-500BC. Jackie, still not feeling well opted out so I was left to do the 10 hour trip without her. The majority of the tour was done via water taxi, and bus and consisted of a total of 6 hours transportation. Leaving at 7 am we climbed into the boat to take us on a tour of the water canals that connect the Carribean and Belize rivers...

Hasta Luego to Paradise | Caribbean Choice | 01.29.07 | Article
Lago De Atitlan, or Lake Atitlan, sits at the gateway to the Maya region of Guatemala, an hour from the city of Antigua.
Eighty-five thousand years ago a huge volcano exploded here, wiping out much of life in Central America. The result is one of the world's most stunning geographic formations - a huge lake surrounded by mountains, valleys and dormant volcanoes. The villages tucked into the rim of the lake offer some of the most spectacular views anywhere in the world...

Hola todos! Soooo much has happened in the past week that I´m beginning to loose track of it all. Let´s see: On Tuesday night Trika and I made dinner for our group of friends and had quite the exciting adventure in La Democracia, the big market. We made a giant stirfry with beet greens and there was delicious canteloupe for desert. At the same time I was creating a chile quile cassy for lunch club on Wed. Wednesday, Sharon, my housemate, had her birthday and so I was able to partake of the DELICIOUS food she and her friend and other housemate, Molly made...

Pimped Up Golf Carts And a Little English Humor | Real Travel | 01.29.07 | Blog
Belize is a huge success. Ended up being the perfect ending to our trip. We are basking in the sun and heat that left Jackie with a touch of heat stroke, and me a giant heat rash. You know me, always prone to some sort of skin disorders while traveling.
San Pedro is such a relaxing beach town with just the perfect amount of tourism to keep us occupied. Love the atmosphere with the beach bars that have live music every night that ranges from alternative, reggae, and acoustic. Not to mention the total lack of vehicles on the island, which leaves golf carts as the most popular form of transportation...

The Stars in Tikal | Blogger | 01.04.07 | Blog
Guatemala. In many ways a special experience, and not only for the fascinating history of the Mayas or the starry night in a hammock.
When we arrived at 6 in the evening, it turned out that the Park Tikal was closed for visitors. The reason? All the presidents of Central America were there at that moment, making lots of noice with their big helicopters and leaving no space for others (seems logical concerning the fact that Tikal sizes only 576 km2). For Stefany and me that wasn´t a problem, cause we would stay overnight to see sunrise at Tikal the next morning. So we took our time to explore the jungle...

Made it to Copan | Travel Pod | 01.04.07 | Blog
We got up early on the morning of the 8th and headed down to the water taxi station to catch our morning ride back over to the little town where our bikes were stashed. The boat ride was much faster and less stressful than the one over the evening before, (way less people, which meant full speed!). Our bikes were still there, and didn´t seem to be missing any parts, so we loaded up and headed out. We had been warned by another BMW rider that had come down from Costa Rica the way we were heading back up that there are two bridges that we have to pass over...

God damn Guatemalan roads!!! | Live Spaces | 01.04.07 | Blog

Hey!
We are now in Solola, Guatemala, near lake Atitlan. Once again, the landscapes are amazing here! The only problem is that we barely have time to look at it while driving since most of the roads are REALLY BAD!!! La Casa (our car) is starting to suffer from it and we´re thinking about jacking it up as soon as possible!
So last time I wrote to you guys, we were in Playa del Carmen in Mexico. So after spending about 5 days on the beach, we left for Tulum where we saw a small ruin site by the sea. I must admit that the Mayas who lived there really had the best spot! .. .

  Monkey Love | Blogger | 01.04.07 | Blog

This morning I got up just before dawn and ventured out into the jungle to see the sun rise over the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal. The ruins are absolutely impressive, rising up above the canopy of the jungle, but the best part of the whole gig was watching the monkeys. I spent at least an hour watching a family of spider monkeys swing their way through the branches directly over my head (note: this makes for a stiff neck). I've seen monkeys in Costa Rica and the Amazon basin but nothing like this...

WOW, it was so cool! There is so much to tell about Tikal. Well first i had to wake up at at 3:15 in the morning and be ready for my bus pick up at 4 am. i know early!!! So i was picked up and brought into Guatemala city. I really hate Guatemala city, even the nice part of town is dirty, lots of homless and it just has a SIN CITY feel to it. Got the airport and go on what was then smallest plane i had ever been on it, seated about 30 ppl. It was a really fast flight, it was like just as soon as the seat belt light came off it was on again because we were decending. We got to flores which is about an hour away from tikal, our guide was already there to start weaving the story about these encredible mayans....
