 Hola Guatemala ! | Blogger | 04.06.07 | Blog
Hola Amigos!! While I have time, I’ll write a complete post about what I’ve been up to. Guatemala is absolutely BEAUTIFUL as you will see in the pictures I’m putting up below. Antigua is a smallish colonial style city in the interior of the country. It’s up in the highlands, so it is relatively dry, and it is surrounded by volcanoes—Volcan de Fuego, Volcan Pacaya and Volcan de Agua. Volcan de Agua (water) is called that because its crater used to be a large lake....

 Border Crossing | Travel Pod | 04.06.07 | Blog
Yesterday morning at 6am I left my homestay family to travel across the border to Guatemala. Trying to say goodbye to a family that speak no English is not easy especially when my Spanish hasn´t advanced enough to hold a conversation. My conversations with the family were often interupted by my use of the dictionary, which kid of puts a dampener on things, however I had progressed from please and thank you by the end of the week...

 Tucans in Tikal | Bootsnall | 04.06.07 | Blog
Then we left Semuc and went onwards to the little town of El Remate, where we were blessed to find a clean room and kind folks to help us get to Tikal (Mayan ruins, only 20 percent of which are excavated.) We were a day after solstice, but this did not stop us from seeing the beautiful misty sunrise, or from later marveling over the fact that those ingenious Mayans constructed their temples so that the solstices and equinoxes shone over significant points on their buildings. The jungle around Tikal was beautiful. The giant ceders and ceiba trees–the national tree of Guatemala and the Mayan tree of life–kept us from feeling the heat....

 Greetings From Guatemala | Typepad | 04.06.07 | Article
Smarty is on the road once again, traveling at top speed through the amazing country of Guatemala, where the temperatures over the last week have ranged from 'how is it possible for any more sweat to escape my pores' to 'where is my hat I need to cover my head in order to sleep without freezing.'
First stop was the lovely island town of Flores, which can be circumambulated in about 15 minutes, even when it's 90 degrees and ragingly humid out, the streets are cobblestone (that's a euphemism) and you're wearing flipflops...

Around the town in a day... | Travel Pod | 04.06.07 | Blog
So today I really screwed up in my Spanish class...I cant figure out the passive voice to save my life...maybe its because I have never had one. My teacher told me about a lady who has a bunch of cats from Germany who lives by herself and screams all day through the bars of her window that the police need to come and help her. All of the people in antigua think she is a spy for the government, but she is 95 years old, so I dont know how good she is at investigative reporting...

 Lago Peten Itza | Blogger | 04.06.07 | Blog
Having booked transportation to spend Christmas Day in Tikal, a friend and I rented a canoe and headed out to explore Lago Peten Itza. The lookout on the peninsula across from Isla Flores turned out to be breathtaking. We almost didn't go, but that would have been a huge mistake. Besides having a great view of the island, there were spectacular views of the lake in several directions. Other highlights of the day were swimming off the dock of a local park and visiting Petencito, a 'nature reserve'...

 traveling to Guatemala | Blogger | 04.06.07 | Blog
In March, I'll be undertaking what will be the first (and let us hope not the last) trip of the year. I'll be heading to Guatemala, where I'll visit three of my favourite places in Guatemala: its Capital City, Antigua Guatemala, and Lago de Atitlan (also known as Panajachel).
Hence, the need to start looking for good hotel deals on-line has come, and thankfully, I've found hotelreservations.com, an easy-to-use website with great deals to be found...
