Bluewater fly fishing definitely brings elegance and style to offshore angling, but it is not always the most productive technique in this arena. Couple this with a sparsely populated, nomadic quarry like Sailfish and you need to even the odds some how if success on the fly is to be achieved. The solution to this conundrum is the small port of Pez Vela on the pacific sea board of southern Guatemala. Pez Vela, only 3 hours drive from Guatemala City, sits on the outskirts of Port Iztapa and roughly translated means Sailfish....

| Long day´s journey into night. Part 1 | Travel Pod | 08.11.07 | Blog |

I had a tough time sleeping the night before I left because I was so keyed up about the trip. It really hit me that I was going on the day before. Eric ended up talking to me for about an hour and he had trouble getting to sleep after that. I had no trouble getting to sleep, but staying asleep was another story. I woke up for good about an hour before the alarm went off.
The airline advised arriving 3 hours before the flight. I made it through check-in and security and walked to the gate in about 35 minutes. To be fair, I think I was in the wrong line for check-in. TACA's gates were interrupted by Lufthansa's and I didn't see that the Guatemala check-ins were on the other side...

Had to farewell Isabelle in Guatemala City this morning and it was naturally a sad occasion, only made easier by the fact that we know it won´t be as long as 18 months until we meet again.
She is a great travel companion and we´d travel with her again in a flash. She was given strict instructions to get her couch ready for us in London and her famous Gratin Dauphinois in the oven.
We spent all day on a non air-con bus on dusty roads and are shattered by the time we arrive in tropical Puerto Barrios on the north coast of Guatemala. It is a typical port town, trucks thundering past at all hours, everyone seems in a hurry to get somewhere else....

Ferrovias, the name of the U.S.-owned Railroad Development Corp.'s operations in Guatemala, runs one line between Puerto Barrios and Guatemala City that moves 15 percent of the Caribbean port's cargo for the capital and 90 percent of the country's imported iron...

Last September ten disciples from Triangle traveled to Guatemala to work in a small community school. The school is located in a shanty town along an abandoned railroad corridor. About 1,500 people live in the “Linea Ferrea” and most families are headed by single moms. Typically the children work selling in the streets, or babysitting younger siblings along the tracks.
In 2003 HOPE Worldwide and Ericsson Guatemala provided the initial funding to build a school for this community. Currently 230 children are enrolled in the school, from preschool through the 5th grade. Funding for the school is routinely short, and yet the teachers continue to provide a loving, supportive educational experience for these children...
